TOLEDO, Ohio — The debate surrounding masks continues, with many major Ohio cities now requiring them in public. But not everyone agrees wearing a mask is needed to contain the virus.
"I think it's an effective way of protecting others around you and protecting yourself. I think it's common sense," said Tom Marino.
"It's just a thing I think that people feel comfortable about, they feel like they're going to be safe from it. But I don't wear a mask when I go out," said Jeff Robinson.
Many people feel as if the entire concept of masks has been turned into a political issue, tying back to why people do not wear them.
"People who think it's like their right not to wear it, I don't really agree with that," said Jacob Colley.
The CDC is still recommending face coverings in public settings. However it's no secret the recommendations have changed multiple times over the past few months.
In case you need some clarification here's an example: If you're going for a walk in the park with yourself, or someone you live with, a mask is not necessary. You are outside and as long as you stay a healthy distance away from others, you're okay to not wear one. However, if you're going to the grocery store, picking up a pizza or going shopping, wearing a mask is recommended because you are inside, close to others.
Regardless not everyone is complying with CDC guidelines. So why should you? Well doctors who are experts in infection control say it is the best way to contain any droplets of the virus.
"It's spread by droplets that can exist on surfaces and remain in the air, and if we can contain those droplets we will protect people around us," said Dr. Brian Kaminski, an emergency room doctor with ProMedica.
Dayton and Columbus have both mandated masks for residents when going out in public. Those who do not comply can be fined. A spokesperson with the City of Toledo says they are looking into a potential mask mandate, but nothing has been implemented just yet.
