Retired Toledo Firefighter Matt Conway dies at 52

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo Fire and Rescue, as well as Toledo Firefighters Local 92, are mourning the loss of retired firefighter Matt Conway, who died Monday. He was 52. 

Conway had retired in February 2023 after 25 years of service. He was appointed to Toledo Fire and Rescue in October 1997. He was assigned to stations 14, 23 and 25. 

Toledo Firefighters Local 92 offered the following statement on social media Tuesday, announcing Conway's passing:

"It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of our recently retired brother, Matt Conway. Matt passed away unexpectedly in his home last night. Matt will live on in our hearts as the kind-hearted, gentle soul who made an impression on all of us who had the privilege to know and work alongside him. While the sadness we feel today is profound, we must make every effort to live as Matt did - for the happiness and well-being of others. Rest in peace, brother."

Toledo Fire and Rescue also gave a statement Tuesday. It is as follows:

"Today, we are saddened by the loss of one of our brothers, Matt Conway. We celebrate the commitment  and passion that Matt had for his firefighting career and the love for the City of Toledo. Our hearts go out to his family. We are honored to have known and worked with him. Thank you for your service and dedication to protecting our community. You will be missed brother."
