'He loved fighting for his country': Woman honors father's memory at Maumee American Legion

U.S. Army Korean War veteran and Purple Heart recipient John Mockensturm served from 1949-1953.

MAUMEE, Ohio — Since 1919, Veterans Day has always been a day many Americans observe the patriotism, nationalism and willingness to serve in the U.S. military.

At the American Legion Post 320 in Maumee, Linda Sellers hugs friends who are like family, consoling her over the loss of her father, a veteran.

"He loved fighting for his country and that's what makes me so proud that I'm his daughter," she said.

In addition to being her father, U.S. Army Korean War veteran and Purple Heart recipient John Mockensturm served from 1949-1953. Additionally, he was a proud member of the American Legion and served as Legion Commander five times. He died on Jan. 4 at 90 years old.

Post 320 was a favorite spot for the father and daughter to visit. Sellers still goes because it's a place that gives her comfort.

"We went to every breakfast at UT and we would spend the whole day together doing things. We would always end up here, having a beer," Sellers said.

It's the sense of comradery that current Legion Commander James Pauly, an Army Sgt. Lt. in the Tank Core 1st Infantry Division in 1971-1974, said everyone comes to Post 320 for. It's also why they celebrate Veterans Day.

"We've served our country. We're proud of it. There's nothing that can get that out of our hearts," Pauly said.

Despite the comradery, the U.S. military's enlistment numbers have declined over the years. Pauly said anyone curious about joining any branch of the military should learn more.

"The chance to serve our country. The chance to be part of something that I think is one of the biggest things you can do in your whole life," he said.

Sellers agreed. She said serving could make you someone's hero, just like her dad is to her. Mockensturm is forever inked on Sellers' arm in a tattoo she got just before Veterans Day.

"His ashes are there. He's with me all the time. I love him," Sellers said.

In honor of Veterans Day, there are deals going on across the U.S. to honor those who have bravely served or are currently serving our country.
