'I had to save her': Angler hailed hero after rescuing person from Maumee River

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Wednesday. Here's what the rescuer had to say.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A local fisherman is being called a hero after saving a person from the Maumee River early Wednesday morning. 

In a Toledo police report, authorities said they responded to the Maumee River near the MLK Bridge after receiving a call for a person in the water around 2 a.m. Police responded to the scene, where they spoke with Justin Slater. 

Slater told police he had been fishing in the Maumee River when he saw a person, whom police identified in a report as a woman, floating in the water. Slater told WTOL 11 he immediately called police, but then decided to take action.

Slater jumped into the water, swam to the woman and pulled her to the river bank. 

A local fisherman is being called a hero after saving a woman from the Maumee River early Wednesday morning.

"I heard the splash," Slater told WTOL 11. "Then I seen her swimming, start screaming for help. I had to save her."

Toledo Fire and Rescue divers entered the water and were able to pull both Slater and the victim from the water.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and evaluation. Her condition remains unknown.
