MONROE, Mich. — A Newport, Mich., man was killed Thursday night in a head-on crash along Newport Road in Frenchtown Township, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office reported.

According to the sheriff's office report, Noel Smith, 54, was driving a 2014 Ford Focus west on Newport Road near War Road when the vehicle traveled left of center and struck an oncoming 2000 Ford F-250.

The truck was being driven by Nicole Herron, 39, also of Newport, the sheriff's office said.

Smith, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from his vehicle and came to rest on the westbound shoulder of the road, the report said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the report said.

Herron was wearing a seatbelt and she was taken to a local hospital, where she was in stable condition, the sheriff's office said.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, the sheriff's office report said.

The crash is under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7756.
