MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — A woman and an infant were killed in a two-vehicle crash in Raisinville Township Tuesday morning, according to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators determined 19-year-old Journee Padgett was driving eastbound on Custer Road at approximately 8:30 a.m. In the rear seat of the car was an infant.

According to authorities, Padget crossed the centerline of Custer Road near Lewis Avenue, and struck a tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction head-on. The sheriff's office said they could not determine the reason Padget crossed the centerline, and said alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.

Following the collision, both vehicles came to rest in the westbound lanes of travel.

Padgett was declared deceased at the scene. The infant passenger was taken to a hospital where they later were pronounced deceased. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and was released from the scene.

According to authorities, Padget was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and the infant passenger was properly secured in a rear-facing car seat.

Authorities continue to investigate. If you have information, you are asked to call the sheriff's office at 734-240-7557.
