MONROE COUNTY, Mich — The Monroe County inmate garden harvested and donated pumpkins to give to local organizations.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff, a total of 76 pumpkins were produced. On Oct. 11, corrections officers delivered 20 pumpkins to the Salvation Army and 56 to the Arthur Leslow Community Center.

The inmate garden initially began in 2023, with a purpose to provide inmates with outdoor time and skills on how to grow and harvest vegetables. Those vegetables were then used in the jail's kitchen to discount food costs for inmates, and many more were donated.

The Monroe County Sheriff's office said the goal for the pumpkin patch was to harvest them for donations to local organizations for children to enjoy.
