MONROE COUNTY, Michigan — Three boaters were rescued from Lake Erie in Monroe County Sunday afternoon when their vessel overturned.

According to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, authorities received a call around 3:30 p.m., stating a vessel had overturned offshore from Sterling State Park and that three people were in the water. The sheriff's office marine unit responded to the scene, alongside the Frenchtown Township Fire Department and South Shore Marine Towing.

The three boaters in the water had been rescued by several good Samaritans who had been fishing nearby when the vessel began sinking, the sheriff's office said. All three boaters were transported to the park's boat launch, where paramedics evaluated them.

One boater was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the incident. The two other boaters were evaluated and released at the scene.

The sheriff's office said its marine unit would coordinate with area towboats for the recovery of the vessel, which ultimately sank in 25 feet of water, three miles offshore from the park. The recovery will occur in the coming days, authorities said; the US Coast Guard has since put out a safety broadcast to inform other boaters of the submerged vessel.

Authorities did not state what lead to the vessel sinking.
