MONROE, Mich. — UPDATE: Around 1 p.m. Sunday, fire crews returned to the scene due to a rekindle in the building, Monroe County dispatch confirmed.
One firefighter was injured as crews battled a significant blaze at Monroe apartment early Sunday.
According to a Facebook post from the Monroe Public Safety Department, crews responded to the building at 49 S. Monroe St. around 4 a.m. after receiving a report of a fire. All residents were evacuated from the building unharmed, the department said.
The City of Monroe Fire Department and Monroe Township Fire Department made an interior attack on the blaze, which was mostly contained to the top floor of the building. As fire conditions worsened, all interior crews were evacuated.
The city's director of public safety, Chad Tolstedt, said all the residents made it out safely, but indicated the damage caused by the fire would displace them.
"Monroe is a historic community, so it's always hard to see some of our historic buildings like this get burned and get damaged, but my main concern is for the residents that are displaced," Tolstedt said.
Tolstedt said that many of the building's residents lost everything.
"All the residents will be displaced due to the smoke, fire, the water damage to the building," he said. "The Salvation Army's already been contacted. They're out now helping those residents. I've spoken with some of them, and some of them have already contacted family members. It's unknown at this time if they'll be able to come back into the apartments. It doesn't look likely."
The Frenchtown Fire Department and the LaSalle Fire Department also responded to the scene, using three ladder trucks to extinguish the fire. During the incident, one firefighter was injured. Tolstedt told WTOL 11 on scene the firefighter fell through stairs and was taken to a hospital, but is expected to be OK.
According to the post, the building's upper floors sustained significant fire damage and water damage was sustained throughout the entire building. Ash and debris were spread over a radius of several blocks.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which is unknown at this time.
According to the Facebook post, the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist residents affected by the fire. Tolstedt told WTOL 11 that the Salvation Army also was helping residents.
