MONROE COUNTY, Michigan — The Monroe County Sheriff's Department is reporting a fatal traffic crash that occurred on South Stoney Creek Road, near Sumpter Road, in Exeter Township. The crash happened Saturday, Aug. 31 at 10:37 p.m.
Investigators state that Zachary Zalenski, 32, of Monroe, was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer northwest on Stoney Creek Road when he crossed the center line entering into the opposing lane of travel and losing control.
Authorities believe the man attempted to regain control of his vehicle by overcorrecting, which resulted in the vehicle leaving the roadway and entering the west ditch line.
Investigators report that the vehicle overturned after it struck a utility pole and came to rest on its roof. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by responding personnel.
The sheriff's office does not believe Zalenski was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. It is reported that the airbags in the vehicle did not deploy. The sheriff cites careless driving as a factor in the crash.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
