TOLEDO, Ohio — Many businesses and most government offices are closed Monday in honor of Juneteenth. But what exactly is this new holiday and what is the appropriate way to celebrate it?
Juneteenth is the nation's youngest federal holiday, but its roots go back more than 150 years.
The United States celebrated its first federally-recognized Juneteenth in 2021 after President Joe Biden signed a bill creating Juneteenth National Independence Day.
Recognition of the holiday gained traction in 2020 amid nationwide protests over police killings of Black Americans including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Taking action can also include making a conscious effort to support local businesses within your community.
In an effort to make this more than a hashtag, we're putting together a list of businesses that are owned by Black men and women within the northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan area.
This list will continue to grow, and if you have a business to add, please text it and a description of what the business' specialty to 419-248-1100. We'd love to see pictures of the business, too!
