Motorcyclist dead following crash on I-75 Saturday

ERIE, Mich. — The Monroe County Sherriff's Department is reporting a fatal crash that occurred on I-75 North near Bay Creek Road around 9:35 p.m. on Saturday, May 25. 

Authorities state the investigation revealed that Christopher Taylor, age 49, of Trenton, Michigan was driving a black 2023 Harley Davidson Street Glide motorcycle on I-75 North. The sheriff indicated that Taylor was side-swiped by a 55-year-old male driver from Toledo driving a 2005 Chevy Malibu.

Witnesses told police that that the car had been traveling at a high rate of speed when it merged into the middle lane, striking Taylor's motorcycle before traveling off the freeway striking a concrete barrier wall before coming to a stop in the center of the freeway.

Responding officers state that Taylor lost control of the motorcycle before he hit the median concrete barrier.

Authorities state that Taylor was wearing a helmet and the Chevy driver was wearing his safety belt, however, there was no airbag deployed in the Chevy.

According to the sheriff's department, Taylor was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 55-year-old driver was not injured but was placed under arrest by responding officers for suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The driver is currently lodged in the Monroe County Jail. His identity is being withheld until he is formally arraigned in Monroe County's First District Court.

The incident is still under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.
