TPD: SWAT called to home in west Toledo after man refuses to leave home after threatening officers

There were dogs inside the residence and a woman was removed after being bitten. She was taken to a hospital for her injuries.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A man is in custody after being barricaded inside a residence on Charlestown Ave. in west Toledo on Saturday afternoon.

Toledo police and SWAT had to be called out to the residence.

A TPD negotiator said police were initially called to the home regarding a domestic incident between 38-year-old Andrea Hartford and 38-year-old Aaron Hopkins.

Police say when they showed up, Hopkins told officers he'd shoot if they came inside. Hopkins would not let police inside to check on the safety of Hartford and was known to have multiple misdemeanor warrants.

SWAT and negotiators were sent to the scene around 1:40 p.m. SWAT was on scene as of 2:20 p.m.

Negotiators were able to successfully talk Hartford out of the house, who was taken to the hospital with a dog bite that happened prior to police arrival.

Hopkins was not responsive to negotiations, so TPD and SWAT “introduced tear gas” to the house and the suspect exited the house where he was taken into custody.

A TPD negotiator said Hopkins will likely be charged with misdemeanors, including menacing. He was taken to the Lucas County Jail.
