Multiple students injured after homemade explosive device set off in Michigan high school

The 16-year-old student who detonated the device was injured, along with four other classmates and a teacher.

NEWAYGO, Mich. — Multiple Newaygo High School students were injured Monday after a student accidentally detonated a homemade explosive device inside the school, according to Michigan State Police.

The 16-year-old student who detonated the device was injured, along with four other classmates and a teacher. The school administration called 911, and the building was immediately evacuated; students were transferred to the bus garage.

MSP said all other Newaygo County schools also went into lockdown, following the county emergency operations plan, until information was obtained that there were no further threats to students.

According to MSP, the student who detonated the device was transferred to the hospital with moderate to severe injuries. The other four students were transported to the hospital by their parents with minor injuries, and the classroom teacher also sought treatment.

For student safety and for the investigation, all the students were dismissed for the day. Other Newaygo County schools remained in session, and MSP said there is no threat to those buildings.

Currently, investigation continues into what kind of material was involved in the explosion, as well as what led to the incident. MSP said the incident appears to be isolated.

Classes will continue as normal on Tuesday, according to Superintendent Dr. Peggy Mathis.
