Toledo City Council pushes back on police reform vote

Council opted to send many other issues to committee at Tuesday's meeting, and only voted for appointments and an amendment to the budget.

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo City Council sent all police reform legislation back to committee Tuesday.

The legislation included giving the Police Civilian Review Board subpoena power, giving funds to the review board, banning no-knock warrants, and expanding the use of body cameras.

"Seeing that stalled out for a longer period of time is definitely disappointing," Black rights activist Julian Mack said.

Mack has been protesting to see police reform for years and has been very busy since the death of George Floyd on that quest. He was surprised to see nothing passed today.

"I've seen the paradigm shift and the support for this grow and grow and grow, there's no reason for this to be postponed," Mack said.

He's worried that the cloud of attention around the four council members indicted for bribery and extortion is distracting from the cause. He's one of three dozen people selected for a new committee that is supposed to look into police reform.

"Otherwise people will get frustrated and will demand more radical action," Mack said.

A meeting meant to organize plans for the committee was supposed to happen last Tuesday but was canceled because of Officer Dia's funeral.

There is still no date nailed down for when they will meet again.

"I understand that and I think we needed that, but still, that does not just change the fact that subpoena power could be passed for the civilian review board, that today we could've ended no-knock warrants," Mack said.
