TOLEDO, Ohio — Two north Toledo homes were seriously damaged, and later demolished, after a fire early Tuesday, in a blaze that began in one home and ignited the one next door.
Toledo Fire and Rescue crews responded to the 1800 block of North Superior Street just before 2 a.m. when a fire began in a white duplex and quickly spread to the occupied home next door. The man in the second home was able to leave the building safely and was seen watching from outside while crews battled the blaze.
The families living in the duplex were not home at the time of the fire, crews said.
A TFRD official described the fire as particularly stubborn and an exhausting fire for the crews to battle; while crews attacked one house fire, the other would frequently reignite. The fire was so intense at one point that crews were instructed to leave the buildings due to safety concerns.
According to TFRD and neighbors, the occupant of the second home is a veteran, and crews were able to rescue one of his military flags from the burning home.
Building inspectors were called to the scene to determine if the duplex needs to be torn down. Meanwhile, a fire investigator is looking into the cause. Crews intend to be on scene for hours to come.
Both homes sustained such extensive damage that they were both demolished Tuesday morning.
No injuries have been reported.
