NEW LONDON, Ohio — A suspect is dead after allegedly shooting two employees at a senior apartment complex in Huron County Friday morning.
According to police in New London, a male resident at Windy Acres on Clifton Street shot two workers before dying by suicide. The two victims were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening.
In a press release, New London police said Huron County dispatchers "advised of an active shooter inside the complex" at around 10:52 a.m. After officers arrived, they found the two injured victims locked in the complex's main office. The victim escaped the office through a window before EMS transported them to separate hospitals.
Police entered the building and found the male resident dead in the lobby. No additional victims or suspects were found after a "thorough check of the building," police said.
Police said the shooter's motive is still being investigated. The names of the victims and the shooter are being withheld by authorities.
A spokesperson for Beach 360 Management, the group that manages Windy Acres, told 3News some residents were evacuated from the building, which is an affordable housing complex for people 62 years and older. As of Friday afternoon, the facility is locked down to everyone but residents and family members. In addition, some family members have been picking up residents and taking them off the property.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is also looking into the incident.
