$1.4M in federal funding awarded to northwest Ohio development projects

TOLEDO, Ohio — Several northwest Ohio communities will receive a combined total of more than a million dollars in federal funding for development projects in the area. 

According to a press release, from State Senator Theresa Gavarone's Office, $1.4 million from the federal Community Development Block Grant Allocation program was awarded to six northwest Ohio communities. The money will be used to assist area communities in the completion of their projects. 

"These federal funds will be of major benefit to every single one of the counties in the Second Senate District and countless residents," Gavarone said in a press release. "These projects will help people from all walks of life and develop our communities for continued success. I am so excited to see the results of this good work!"

The projects are generally focused on creating accessible infrastructure, water and sewage projects and assisting older adults, as well as providing assistance to people in need. 

The list below shows the communities that received funding, as well as the details of the projects with which the funding is providing assistance:

Lucas County: $540,000  

  • Area Office of Aging's Senior Meals delivery program
  • Repair 10 homes for income-eligible seniors
  • Replace 111 curb ramps in Oregon for ADA compliance

Wood County: $328,000

  • Install ADA-compliant sidewalks and curb-cuts in Bradner and Custer
  • Install 14 septic tank risers to 14 income-eligible residents in Portage
  • Reconnect 14 failing septic tank systems to income-eligible residents in Dunbridge

Erie County: $150,000

  • Provide food assistance to 10,425 people through non-profit OHgo
  • Provide temporary shelter to unhoused people by providing funding to Volunteers of America

Huron County: $162,000

  • Replace a portion of water infrastructure in Willard
  • Install security fencing around the water plant in New London

City of Norwalk: $139,200

  • Improve accessibility of a marking lot at the McGuan All-Abilities Park

Ottawa County: $166,000

  • Install curb cuts on the north side of Port Clinton 
  • Establish free health assessment clinics in multiple senior centers
