Local fire departments say they had few heat-related emergency calls this week. Rossford firefighter credits it to people being prepared

Rossford firefighter Mike Lord thinks people were prepared for the heat. The University of Toledo Medical Center did have sunburn and dehydration incidents, though.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Monclova Township, Lake Township, Perrysburg and Rossford fire departments all say they received few to no heat-related emergency calls this week as a heat wave swept through northwest Ohio.

Rossford firefighter Mike Lord said he believes people have been taking the right precautions thanks to word spreading about how to keep safe during extreme heat.

He said usually when the Rossford Fire Department does get heat emergency calls, it's from people such as construction workers outside in hot conditions or pets being left in cars.

However, the University of Toledo Medical Center's emergency department received a few heat-related incidents, mostly sunburn and dehydration, according to department director Dr. Williams Saunders.

Saunders Tuesday and Wednesday had the highest number of incidents the emergency department handled.

He advises people to prevent sunburn by wearing clothes that cover the skin. Saunders also says putting lotion or sunscreen on even when it isn't sunny out is important as rays can still affect your skin.

"Keep things simple, always wear protection from the sun, sunglasses, clothing, and lotion, always stay hydrated," Saunders said. "At least water, if not, something with electrolytes in it like a Gatorade or Powerade, because the more you sweat, the more you lose electrolytes and we want to prevent that from being the issue that brings you to the hospital."
