TOLEDO, Ohio — Notre Dame Academy's Speech and Debate Team had a successful weekend at a state tournament.
Six of the team's students placed in the top 10 in the state and the team was the highest ranking from the Toledo district at the Ohio Speech and Debate Association's State Tournament
Students Aya Kanaan and Ashley Thind were semifinalists in the duo interpretation category and placed ninth in the state, according to academy spokesperson Kitty Slight.
Students Lana Kanaan and Kelby Armstrong placed eighth in the state; Numa Majeeb was a semifinalist in the declamation category and placed ninth in the state; and Ellasyn Brookens was a state finalist and placed sixth in the state in the oral interpretation category.
The competition was held at Wooster City Schools about 30 minutes southwest of Akron.

"Notre Dame Academy’s Speech and Debate Team launched nearly 30 years ago and is one of only two teams of its kind in the Diocese of Toledo. NDA’s Speech and Debate Team provides an opportunity for creative expression and aims to promote effective communicators, critical thinkers, and ethical leaders," Slight said in a press release.
