2023-24 construction employment data released; Ohio ranked among top

Employment data collected by the Associated General Contractors of America shows that Ohio and Michigan ranked among the states with the largest increase.

OHIO, USA — Love it or hate it, construction is here to stay in the Midwest.

National data released by the Associated General Contractors of America indicates that both Ohio and Michigan saw a varying increase in construction employment between May 2023 and May 2024.

According to the data, between May 2023 and May 2024, 39 states saw an increase in the number of people employed by construction companies, while ten states and the District of Columbia lost construction jobs and one state had employment rates remain unchanged. 

Michigan ranked fourth in the list of states that saw an increase in construction jobs over the 12-month period of time, with 15,900 total employees. This shows a 8.4% growth from the previous year, ranking Michigan third nationally in percentage increase over the course of one year.

Michigan trails Texas, Florida and California respectively when looking at the total number of individuals employed by state over the 12 months.

Looking at recent data between April 2024 and May 2024, Ohio ranked first in the largest number of construction workers employed during the one month period of time. Roughly 7,000 jobs were recorded in the state of Ohio, marking a three percent increase from the previous month.

Other states with large monthly increase include Florida, Texas and New York.
