OHIO, USA — More than three dozen historic preservation projects in Ohio will receive state tax credits, according to an announcement from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's office Wednesday.
The more than $56 million in tax credits will be applied across 37 projects, awarded through the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit Program. The projects aim to preserve 42 buildings in total, and leverage approximately $715 million in private investments, according to the release.
The state said its investment in the projects will develop economic activity in Ohio through the rehabilitation of often vacant buildings, as well as preserve the state's history.
"By preserving our historic buildings, we’re retaining the unique identity of Ohio’s communities,” said DeWine in a press release. “Through the tax credit program, we’re ensuring that future generations can experience the character and stories that shaped our state in the spaces where they happened.”
Projects in northwest Ohio
The tax credits were awarded to projects from a variety of locations across the state, including two in northwest Ohio: Toledo's Riverview Tower (once called the Fiberglas Tower) on North St. Clair Street and the Stein Building on Adams Street.
The Riverview Tower project was awarded a $3 million tax credit for the $16 million project. The building's second through 13th floors will be rehabilitated for commercial and residential use. Built to headquarter Owens-Corning in 1968, renovations in the tower will preserve many historic facets of its construction, such as aluminum paneling and terrazzo flooring.
The Stein Building will receive $1.86 million in tax credits for its $8 million preservation project. The building was built in 1932 in an Art Deco style and will be preserved and developed for commercial and residential usage. The building's windows will be taken back to their original size, according to the project's description.
