OHIO, USA — The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is warning of a "resurgence" in scam texts requesting payment for unpaid tolls through fake websites.
The commission said the Ohio Turnpike does not request customers to make payments by text and collections of unpaid tolls and violations are not done through text either. They said the only websites associated with Ohio Turnpike E-ZPass accounts are ezpassoh.com and ohioturnpike.org.
What you should do if you receive a scam text
The Ohio Turnpike Commission said mobile device owners who receive a suspicious tolling text message should delete them without clicking on the link.
If you clicked on a fraudulent link and provided any personally identifiable information, the Turnpike Commission said you should immediately contact your bank or credit card provider.
Victims of the text scam are encouraged to file a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), including the phone number of where the text originated and the website listed in the text.
If you have questions about tolls incurred, the commission said you should check the toll agency's website or contact their customer service phone number at 440-971-2222.
