1 dead, 4 hospitalized in Erie Township crash

Reports stated that "speed and careless driving are factors in the crash."

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — One person is dead and four others are in the hospital after a late-night crash in Erie Township.

The incident happened Monday around 11:45 p.m. on Telegraph Road near Erie Road in Michigan. Monroe County sheriffs deputies at the scene told WTOL three cars were involved.

Gary Akridge, 37, of Monroe, and a front seat passenger, 41, were traveling north on Telegraph when Akridge crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on.

Akridge's vehicle flipped onto its right side before coming to a stop in the middle of the roadway. The oncoming vehicle carrying two occupants, a 58-year-old and a 21-year-old, came to a stop in a ditch along Telegraph.

Moments later, another vehicle was traveling north on Telegraph when the driver, a 19-year-old, veered to try and avoid the crash scene but ended up crashing into the front of Akridge's overturned vehicle.

Akridge's vehicle was pushed backward and came to a final stop on the west shoulder of Telegraph. Akridge was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Only one occupant involved in the collisions was not wearing a seatbelt. Airbags did not deploy in two vehicle's, including the one driven by Akridge.

Reports stated that "speed and careless driving are factors in the crash."

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
