One killed in crash on Turnpike in Sandusky County

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said a 34-year-old Virginia man drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a tractor-trailer that was disabled in the shoulder.

SANDUSKY COUNTY, Ohio — One person was killed in a crash on the Ohio Turnpike in Sandusky County Tuesday morning.

The crash happened near milepost 94 in Riley Township, east of the State Route 53 interchange just after 7 a.m.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a car driven by Avery Pierce Jr., 34, of Ashburn, Virginia, drove off the right side of the roadway and struck the rear of a tractor-trailer that was disabled on the right shoulder.

OSHP said Pierce was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Alcohol use appears to be a factor in the crash and Pierce was not wearing a safety belt, according to OSHP.

OSHP said the disabled tractor-trailer did have reflective safety triangles displayed at the rear of the to the rear of the tractor-trailer at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
