Memorial service held for Oregon, Ohio first responders who have passed away

One by one, the names of the deceased were read as a bell tolled in their honor.

OREGON, Ohio — The City of Oregon held their annual memorial service on Sunday to honor those in their public safety divisions who have passed on.

The event took place in the front of the Municipal Complex on Seaman Road.

Each year the city honors those who have passed away who were part of the Oregon Police Division, Oregon Fire and Rescue Department, as well as city officials and other employees.

One by one, the names of the deceased were read aloud as a bell rang one time in their honor.

According to the city, those who were honored at Sunday’s event are not only seen as protectors of the city but also family.

"We kind of conduct ourselves as family here. So they are members of our own family,” said Oregon mayor Michael Seferian. “After all, most of the time you find yourself at work, sometimes more than you are at home, if you're not sleeping. We're a very close-knit group here.”

Residents in Oregon say they are thankful for the services their fallen heroes have done as well as for their home.

The Clay High School marching band also participated in the event.

The memorial service has taken place each year for 57 years.
