OREGON, Ohio — A Toledo Refining Company project may cause a natural gas smell for a short period in part of the Oregon community Wednesday, according to a social media announcement from the Oregon Fire and Rescue Department. It poses no risk to the public, officials said.
The project will occur at the Toledo Refining Company tank farm on Pickle Road and will involve the system that adds odorizer to propane. As propane is naturally odorless, refining companies add a smell to it, allowing people to detect it should a leak occur in their home. The odor is pungent by design, the company said, and even a small amount can produce a strong smell that can be carried by the wind.
The refining company said they would "do everything possible to eliminate odors" but there is a small chance the work might generate a natural gas smell for a short time.
The company encouraged anyone with questions to call plant protection at 419-698-6600.
