3 injured in crash involving ODOT vehicle in Ottawa County

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said an ODOT International truck was struck from behind by a vehicle. Three people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Ohio — Three people were injured following a crash Monday morning in Ottawa County involving an Ohio Department of Transportation vehicle.

The crash happened at 11:15 a.m. on State Route 2 between State Route 163 and State Route 53 in Portage Township.

According to OSHP, a westbound vehicle driven by a 50-year-old from Fremont struck the rear end of an ODOT International truck operated by a 48-year-old from Oak Harbor.

OSHP said the 50-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The 48-year-old driver of the ODOT vehicle and his passenger, a 52-year-old from Oak Harbor, were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to OSHP, the emergency lights on the ODOT vehicle were flashing at the time of the crash. The driver who hit the ODOT vehicle was cited for failure to maintain an assured clear distance ahead.

According to ODOT, this is the 69th crew to be struck this year across the state. The department said it had 56 incidents all of 2023.
