Ohio elementary school installs new book vending machine to celebrate literacy

The initiative rewards students' achievements with gold coins that unlock access to brand new books in the vending machine.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Columbus elementary school has unveiled a new way for kids to access free books besides just at a library.

Parkmoor Elementary School held the ribbon cutting for its first book vending machine on Thursday, the first of two that will have a home in the Columbus City School district.

The book vending machine is meant to celebrate student literacy and is part of the district's literacy support program and positive behavioral intervention support. The initiative rewards students' achievements with gold coins that unlock access to brand new books in the vending machine.

The personalized experience allows each student to pick the books based on their preferences.

A Columbus City Schools representative said the vending machines emphasize the district's commitment to expanding literacy initiatives across their schools.

It's currently unclear where the second book vending machine will be housed.
