TOLEDO, Ohio — Police responded to an incident outside of a nightclub in west Toledo around 2:20 a.m. on Saturday.
According to TPD, a suspect, identified in a later report as 23-year-old Tobin Triplett Jr., shot a person outside of Chasers nightclub, just off of Dorr Street near North Byrne Road. Police said in the report Ohio State Police and OIU (Liquor Control) were also at the scene. A separate police report from the TPD gang task force said officers on their task force left their curfew sweep to also respond to the scene.
Additionally, I.D.E.R. Security, a Toledo-based private security business, was also on scene and was involved, police said in the report.
Triplett was taken into custody and then transported to the hospital, according to the report, though police did not describe the nature or extent of any injuries he had.
The shooting victim, a 19-year-old, was treated on scene, then taken to the hospital in what police described in the report as critical, but stable condition.
According to Toledo Municipal Court records, Triplett was charged with resisting arrest and possession of controlled substances. A court document indicates Triplett was in possession of a "small baggie containing pills which presumptively tested positive for methamphetamine".
Police continue to investigate the incident. In the report, Toledo police also listed an occupied structure in the 1100 block of North Byrne Road as having been struck during the incident, though no one there was injured.
Chasers General Manager James Baker says that even though the shooting happened close to the bar, it had nothing to do with the business.
“A lot of this has to do with the area of Toledo. They come and go as they please around here,” said Baker. “What happened last night was ridiculous.”
Baker says problems with large unruly crowds began when they opened the business for the summer season a few weeks ago.
He says crowds frequently gather in the parking lot and problems often begin when his customers leave the bar.
Baker hopes they won’t have to close the bar for the summer but says customers are expected to carry themselves in a certain way.
“Respect our stuff like you would want yourself to be respected. And so far it’s been like that. It’s just last night was shocking,” said Baker.
