MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — A pilot and his passenger escaped injury after a helicopter crash Thursday morning in Monroe County.

Monroe County dispatch received a call from a resident reporting that a helicopter had crashed near their home shortly before 10:45 a.m. Thursday, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said in a media release.

First responders located the crashed helicopter in a farmer's field near Oelke and Yensch roads in London Township.

The 51-year-old pilot, from Newport, said he began to experience engine trouble while heading back to the Willow Run Airport, located near Ypsilanti and roughly 20 miles north of the crash site.

The pilot identified the field as a suitable location and used autorotation to control the helicopter's descent before crashing, the sheriff said.

The pilot and passenger, who were not further identified, were uninjured in the crash.

The incident is under investigation by the Uniform Services Division and Federal Aviation Administration. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7700.
