Pit bull adoption event held downtown Saturday

Lucas County Pit Crew and Renaissance Toledo came together on Saturday to raise awareness about pit bulls as pets.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Renaissance Hotel in downtown Toledo welcomed some "dog-gone cute" guests on Saturday afternoon.

Lucas County Pit Crew  and the pups were there for a special adoption event which was billed as 'Pints for Pits'.

"There's tons of adoptable dogs, and cats and kittens here, they're having lunch and dinner specials today. The animals will be here 'till two, but the specials in the restaurant will be going on until six," said Jean Keating, the Executive Director of the Lucas County Pit Crew.

Keating said that the hotel served as the perfect location to show off the pups.

"It's a beautiful setting, and we're a local rescue here, so coming downtown and bringing our adorable companions into such a beautiful setting, we were like, "Yes! We'll be there," said Keating.

The Pit Crew partnered with the hotel and Brim House in order to help pit bulls find their forever homes, while also breaking stereotypes surrounding their breed.

Some of the myths surrounding pit bulls are that they are more aggressive than other breeds, bad with kids, and that you should only adopt them as a puppy.

However, according to the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, all of these myths are easily debunked.

They say many of the misconceptions can be attributed to poor living conditions for the dogs, mistreatment, and lack of training.

Athena Moulopoulos, Director of Rooms and organizer of the event, said they will be holding many adoption events in the near future where the public is encouraged to come and meet the dogs. She hopes events like Pints for Pits can help to change minds about the breed.

"I mean, I own three pitbulls myself, so I definitely have a strong opinion about them," said Moulopoulos.

Purchases made at Saturday's event went toward the Lucas County Pit Crew to help continue the cause.
