ADRIAN, Mich. — Demolition on the former Promedica Bixby Hospital in Adrian is scheduled to begin Thursday, four years after it closed.
ProMedica said in a press release that demolition on the hospital's main building, located at 818 Riverside Ave., is scheduled to begin Thursday and last approximately two weeks, weather permitting. Crews will work seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to demolish the building. The building will be taken down in sections to mitigate noise pollution for residents, ProMedica said.
After that, demolition and cleanup on the 67-year-old facility will continue through at least April 2025. ProMedica said residents can expect to hear some level of noise during the process, including sounds from the equipment, backup beepers and concrete grinding.
Dust mitigation processes will also be used, the company said in the release. The demolition will not cause any road closures, ProMedica said.
Bixby Hospital first opened in 1957 until it closed in 2020 when ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital opened after beginning construction in 2018. The latter is about 6 miles from the site of Bixby.
“We know the former Bixby Hospital carries countless memories for people all across our community,” Julie Yaroch, DO, president of ProMedica Hickman Hospital, said in the release. “For 63 years, it was the place where community members were welcomed into the world, where life-saving care was delivered, and where families and friends said final farewells to loved ones.
"It was also a place where generations of hospital staff demonstrated their tireless commitment to patients and formed lasting bonds. As we say goodbye to this building to pave the way for redevelopment, we keep those memories in mind.”
