TOLEDO, Ohio — After five years of anticipation, the public will get its first glance inside the brand new Generations Tower at ProMedica Toledo Hospital this weekend.
Media members were invited inside for a preview Wednesday to see what $400 million could get.
The brand new wing towers over Toledo Hospital, stocked with shiny new equipment and modern facilities.
It's a 13-story building with roughly 300 private patient rooms and a nurse collaboration hub on each floor.
That's a lot of numbers, but for ProMedica chief medical officer Dr. Kent Bishop, the most important statistic is one enhanced facility to care for those in the most vulnerable of states.
"Northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan deserve state-of-the-art care and they deserve clinical excellence, and now in a facility like that we can do both," Bishop said. "That's just an exciting thing for me, looking as a physician for over 25 years in this community. I couldn't be more proud of the physicians that are going to walk these halls."
ProMedica officials said the cutting edge technology actually helps when it comes to the patient experience.
"In this day of computers and all the strain and stresses the nursing staff goes through, we really try to make sure we designed a building that can be more ergonomic for them," Bishop said.
The design was deliberate. It was intended to make a hospital feel more like a hotel for patient comfort, but also for the employees who spend much of their daily lives inside these walls.
"Being able to bring the facility commiserate with the level of care that's going on within its walls is a tremendous testament to what our organization values," project manager Matt Nagel said. "Serve this community for generations to come, thus the name of the project."
ProMedica is inviting the public to check out the tower this Saturday from 1p.m. to 4 p.m.
The tower will begin operations on July 16, Bishop said. The hospital will then fill the rest of the rooms over an eight week period.
