MAUMEE, Ohio — The Toledo Humane Society discovered nine puppies that were left abandoned at the facility on Tuesday morning.
Staff and volunteers at the Humane Society found the puppies in a play yard outside. Two of the nine were locked in a tote bin, while the rest of them were left outside in the yard area, according to THS.
"Normal routine for us is that we get in, we get things ready and we take the dogs out to the play yard in the morning so we can clean their kennels," said Erika Cook, shelter manager at the Toledo Humane Society. "When our volunteers were walking the dogs out to the play yard this morning, they heard the whining first and then they found it."
The Humane Society said that they often get cats and adult dogs left at the facility, but not often do people leave puppies.
"Puppies is more unusual," said Cook. "We always ask that people just contact us instead of doing that. We'd rather work with the people, really get to know the animals. Their ages, what's going on, instead of just having them abandoned outside. We don't know how long they were out there, but any situation like that, we'd just much rather people call and contact us."
Cook said that all the puppies received their vaccines on Tuesday and the next step is for them to have surgery to be spayed and neutered.
The public is also able to see the puppies beginning on Tuesday and can be put on hold for adoption.
