Road closure in Monroe for cleanup following fire at apartment building in March

Monroe police said East First Street from Monroe Street to the alley east of Monroe Street will be closed beginning at 6 p.m. Monday until at least Friday, April 5.

MONROE, Mich. — A road closure will be in effect in Monroe for cleanup following an apartment fire in March.

Monroe police said East First Street from Monroe Street to the alley east of Monroe Street will be closed beginning at 6 p.m. Monday until at least Friday, April 5. Police said traffic should be able to use the alley south of First Street, but the alley north of First Street will be blocked off.

According to police, a crane will be brought in to remove large, damaged debris from the four-story building at 49 S. Monroe Street.

The apartment caught fire around 4 a.m. on March 24. All residents were able to get out of the building unharmed, Monroe authorities said.

The Frenchtown Fire Department and the LaSalle Fire Department also responded to the scene. During the incident, one firefighter was injured after falling through the stairs. He was taken to the hospital but was expected to be OK.

According to crews, the building's upper floors sustained significant fire damage, and water damage was sustained throughout the entire building. Ash and debris were spread over a radius of several blocks.
