SCAM ALERT: Scammer posing as Monroe County detective circulating

The sheriff's office states that any community members who think they may have fallen victim to the scam should contact Monroe County Dispatch immediately.

MONROE, Mich — The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has reported a phone scam targeting members on the county's community.

According to Sheriff Troy Goodnough, a scammer is contacting 'would-be victims', and identifying themselves as  'Detective Robert Blair'.

Authorities report that the scammer will instruct the victim to call the phone number "734-264-7678 ext. 2."

If you do call this number, investigators said the caller will receive an automated message that states "Thank you for Calling the Monroe County Sheriff's Office," and will direct you to a phone tree with different designated responses.

The sheriff's office stated that if someone were to select number one on the phone tree, the call will be directed to a live person. Authorities state that the live person does not sound like they are from over seas. 

The sheriff's office said it does not know what information the scammer is looking to collect if someone calls the provided number.

The Monroe County sheriff noted that a Detective Robert Blair is employed by the agency, but does not call or respond to the listed scam number. 

The office stated that if a community member needs to verify the validity of of an officer or or detective within the department, they can contact the Monroe County Records Division at 734-240-7415. 

If you live in Monroe County, Mich. and have called this scam number and given personal or financial information to the person on the pother line, please contact Monroe County Central Dispatch at 734-243-7070 to file a report.
