Michigan man rescues children from house fire, sustains severe burns

Authorities say the 24-year-old man stayed inside the burning home to rescue his children. The house is considered a total loss.

SHERIDAN, Mich. — A 24-year-old man who stayed inside his burning home to rescue his children is now recovering in the hospital.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. Monday at a home in the 5000 block of S Amsden Road. By the time fire crews arrived, all occupants of the double wide mobile home—two adults and five children between 1 and 8 years old—had escaped.

The homeowner, a 24-year-old man, had noticed the fire and began telling his family. The woman in the home grabbed the two children sleeping in their room and escaped. The man stayed inside the burning home to rescue the remaining three children.

"That’s when we believe he got burned on his legs, back and arms. He was conscious when they loaded him in the ambulance,” said Sheridan Fire Department Lt. Chad Wittingen.

The man was taken to a hospital with severe burns.

Authorities believe the fire was started accidentally. The home is a total loss, and the family will be staying with family and friends.
