Supporting the people around you: Small business owners hope holiday shoppers go local

The owner of the Handmade Hotspot in Northwood says not only are you giving back to the community when you shop locally, but the gift you buy is a one-of-a-kind.

"Shopping local is important for a lot of different reasons," said Jeremy Haase, the owner of Freight House Coffee Company in Oregon. "Small business is hard, so, the more people we get to other businesses the better it is for everybody,"

The privately-owned coffee shop posted on Facebook tagging other privately-owned stores to encourage customers to shop locally during the holiday season.

"People like to shop small," Haase said. "It just feels good to go out to other local businesses and buy stuff and you're helping them and the crafts are cool."

Another small business filled with lots and lots of crafts is the Handmade Hotspot in Northwood. Owner Breanne Boerst says when you shop local, you are supporting the community you live in.

"You're supporting families that live in the area. It could be your neighbor. It could be your best friend that's here. You're just supporting so many people that are around you," she said.

Boerst says not only are you giving back to the community when you shop, but the gift you buy is a one-of-a-kind.

"Everything here is made one of a kind," Boerst said of her business. "We don't typically restock the same exact thing, so when you're getting a present for someone, that's going to be the only one in the world. It makes it extra special."
