Technology in smartwatches can be a life-saving tool

In a crash on I-280 in Toledo in March, one of the phone calls to 911 that notified authorities came from a victim's Apple Watch.

TOLEDO, Ohio — One of the victims in a fatal crash on I-280 in March contacted 911. But it wasn't him who made the call, it was his Apple Watch.

Depending on the model of your Google Pixel Watch, Apple Watch or Garmin Watch, you could be wearing a life-saving piece of equipment.

"It will beep at you. It will have a little thing that says 'We're going to call in 10, 9, 8,' so many seconds on there," Tom Lawrence from CNWR Inc., an IT consulting company in Toledo, said. "If you don't respond, it can auto-call a series of emergency contacts or it can actually call 911."

And that's not the only thing the SOS Crash Detection can do.

"It also does the E-911 which is the send your location and data and everything else so they can immediately come to your location," Lawrence said.

All of the information being sent to first responders in real-time is something that Jamar Winston from the Toledo Fire Department said can be extremely helpful.

"Getting there very fast, being able to get to our patient, to assess our patient, to treat our patient and get them to the next level of care," Winston said. "Time is everything and that is a very important piece of technology that is available."
