TOLEDO, Ohio — Nov. 3 marks the end of daylight saving time, and Americans will turn back their clocks as they "fall back" to standard time. The American Red Cross said the beginning and end of daylight saving time is the perfect way to remind yourself to test your home smoke and fire alarms to ensure they are working.
Having working smoke alarms can decrease the risk of dying in a home fire, and American Red Cross wants you to help prevent fire-related deaths and injuries by encouraging the testing of your home fire alarms.
So far in October, the Red Cross of Northern Ohio said they have assisted 345 people affected in 86 home fires.
In order to be rather safe than sorry, the American Red Cross asks that you do the following.
- Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, including all bedrooms and sleeping areas.
- Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years or older, as sensors can wear out over time.
- Make sure everyone in your household knows your two-minute home fire escape plan.
- Have at least two ways to get out of every room, and select a spot away from your home, where everyone can meet incase of a fire.
If you are not able to purchase new smoke alarms, contact your American Red Cross of Northern Ohio for help.
