LUNA PIER, Mich — Homeowners in the city of Luna Pier are waiting out threatening conditions caused by flooding.
Record high water levels at Lake Erie paired with strong winds, splashed water over the seawall. This caused residents in the southern part of Allen Cove Road, the lowest lying area, to evacuate Monday night.
The city's pumps worked overnight to keep the water level down that rose more than a foot to some homes.
The streets dried by the Tuesday morning.
"We can protect for pretty much anything until it gets over a 20 knot northeast wind and then waves are so big that we just try to pump as much as we can to keep up with it, to keep the maximum level. It's just the nature of the beast," Mayor Jim Gardner said.
Gardner added that the stationary pumps are keeping up and their dike system is holding the water back, but workers are ready to respond if conditions worsen.
A Lake Shore Flood warning is in effect until 10 p.m. Tuesday.
