Sonic boom possible Thursday as 180th fighter jets train in skies over northwest Ohio.

A sonic boom is possible as the 180th Fighter Wing performs a test Thursday.

TOLEDO, Ohio — UPDATE: The training flights planned for Thursday were postponed because of inclement weather.

Editor's note: The above video originally aired in August, 2022.

A sonic boom is possible Thursday as fighter jets will be training in the skies over northwest Ohio between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The jets, part of the Ohio Air National Guard's 180th Fighter Wing, are conducting what the unit calls a "functional check flight."

"A functional check flight is conducted following heavy maintenance on the aircraft, putting the aircraft through strenuous testing and maneuvers to ensure all systems of the aircraft function properly and ensuring mission readiness, before putting the aircraft back into operational rotation," according to a news release from the 180th.

The fighter jets will conduct the test 30,000 feet above Ottawa, Findlay and Lima, but residents across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan may be able to hear part of the training.

Authorities with the 180th warned that a sonic boom may be audible as the jets reach supersonic speeds during the test.

Although scheduled for this afternoon, the flight could be delayed or cancelled due to weather, officials said.

Jets from the 180th rattled the region with a sonic boom during a similar training exercise in August

The 180th Fighter Wing is part of the Ohio Air National Guard and employs more than 1,000 people. Based at Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport in Swanton, the 180th Fighter Wing's mission includes supporting NORAD and U.S. Northern Command operations.
