'The violence needs to stop': South Toledo residents react to shooting that left teen dead, man injured

Police said they don't have a suspect in custody. If you have any information regarding the shooting, you are asked to call or text Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.

TOLEDO, Ohio — UPDATE: Toledo police have since identified both victims. One of the victims has died from his injuries. The story below has been updated to reflect this information.

Two people were shot Friday afternoon on Beecham Street near Western Avenue, according to Toledo police.

One of the victims, a 25-year-old man, was found lying in the street. The second victim, 17-year-old Marshawn Robinson, was found in the rear of a nearby residence, according to police. Robinson was shot multiple times and later died from his injuries.

"I don't react to them," a south Toledo resident said of gunshots in her neighborhood. "I hear them so much, but I knew something was close."

The resident, who asked to remain anonymous for her safety, has lived in the neighborhood for more than 40 years. She said she was in her home when she heard gunshots.

She wishes those sounds weren't familiar to her.

"I heard five gunshots, then a minute went by, and then five or six more," she said. "Then I heard the sirens right after that."

With the victims being young, area residents said it makes the situation harder. This kind of violence is happening already, with a whole summer ahead.

"It's really sad," the south Toledo resident said. "It's not safe to go in the store anymore or anything."

Kari Chevalier said she's been in the neighborhood her whole life.

"We need help getting the violence down, it's not just gun violence," Chevalier said. "There's all sorts of weapons. The violence needs to stop. It's too much anymore."

She said she's been seeing the violence worsen through the years.

"Every day you're hearing about a shooting," she said. "I'm afraid to even walk out of my own home anymore. I remember as a kid you were able to walk outside and have a good time. Not you're afraid to even get mail out of your mailbox."

But others have a different mindset.

"I'm not afraid," the anonymous south Toledo resident said. "I will never let nobody make me afraid of going out of my house. Sit outside."

Police said they don't have a suspect in custody just yet. If you have any information regarding the shooting, you are asked to call or text Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111. You can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward if your information leads to an arrest.
