TOLEDO, Ohio — UPDATE: The owner of Spaghetti Warehouse told WTOL 11 Tuesday afternoon that the restaurant has reopened.
The original story is below:
The Spaghetti Warehouse restaurant in downtown Toledo was closed on Monday after the Ohio Department of Taxation issued a suspension notice because of tax issues.
The closure has left customers worried about the South Superior Street restaurant's future. Some learned about the suspension from the department's notice posted on the business's door.
The suspension, which prohibits the restaurant from making retail sales, stems from about $3,000 owed in taxes that were recently made known to the business, according to owner Michael Kim.
Kim said the business has the funds to resolve the issue but has been delayed in doing so due to technical issues with the state’s payment system. As soon as the restaurant can pay, he says it will reopen.
Clyde Jenkins is a regular customer at Spaghetti Warehouse and expressed his concerns about the closure.
He said it's 39-year-old son's favorite restaurant, who has Down syndrome.
“He loves that restaurant," Jenkins said. "Most restaurants we go to we have a hard time getting him to sit still and behave. But he goes there and he loves that place.”
Jenkins and his family recently purchased $150 in gift cards during the restaurant's Black Friday promotion. When his brother attempted to use the gift cards on Monday, he found the doors locked and the notice from the state.
“I like the food and the atmosphere there is great,” Jenkins added. “I hope they do get it resolved and open up.”
The department of taxation declined to comment on Monday, citing confidentiality.
Kim hopes to open the restaurant on Tuesday.
