Oil runoff in Spencer Township creek has been stopped, Ohio EPA says

The Ohio EPA said it has not seen any wildlife impacts from the spill.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has stopped an oil runoff from a junkyard that leaked into a creek in Spencer Township, the agency said Friday.

The spill is near Angola Road and had traveled about half a mile down a ditch. The agency has deployed a response team to try and stop the spill and hopes to pinpoint the cause and origin.

The EPA said it has not seen any wildlife impacts from the spill.

An employee at the junkyard where the spill happened has been applying absorbent pads and booms in the creek to contain the oil and the EPA said it will continue to revisit the facility and do additional clean-up.

Steve Kester, a Spencer Township trustee, said the spill needs to be cleaned up as soon as possible.

"I guess they will have to see exactly where it's coming from and it needs cleaned up as fast as possible, it should have been in the works already," he said.

Tim Bowes, who works in the Spencer Township Maintenance Department, said it has been a problem for quite some time.

"Not to the severity it is now. It's kind of unnerving to look at," he said.

Bob Klumm, a Spencer Township resident, said he trusts authorities will solve the issue.

"I'm sure they will get it figured out one way or another," he said.

"The county was upset, they called the EPA and they will be responsible for cleanup, remediation, containment, so that will all be on the Ohio EPA," he said.

Township authorities say the EPA will determine if the spill should concern area residents.
