UAW leadership says the stand-up strike against the Big 3 saved the Toledo Machining Plant

UAW leadership said before its strike with the Big 3, the Toledo Machining plant was in jeopardy of closing, but that possibly will change.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — Lisa Logan is the General Manager at Interstate Lanes in Rossford, Ohio.

But before she came to the bowling alley to work full-time to help run the family business, she spent 10 years at Toledo Machining in Perrysburg Township.

"When I first started at Toledo Machining, they had about between 2,500 to 2,800 employees,” Logan said.

Today, the plant has 484 workers, according to Stellantis’ website.

At the time, Logan said Stellantis was looking for people to leave. So, she took a buyout and went to work for the family business.

She said there's been talk of the plant shutting down since she started in 1998.

"Seems like every time a contract came up, people said, ‘We might lose our jobs, we might get laid off,’ and there were times that we did get laid off," Logan said.

Last week, UAW announced that if the tentative deal goes through, the UAW's efforts and agreement with Stellantis will not only save jobs, but also add jobs.

Logan was glad to hear this announcement for both her friends and family, and the businesses in the area.

"If a big job like that is lost, it's a trickle-down effect,” she said. “It really affects a lot of businesses. It's not just the worker."

Joe Schaller is a Perrysburg Township Trustee and said he has heard rumors of Toledo Machining closing for years.

"As far as the township goes, that's the last thing we would want to see, a vacant facility," Schaller said.

He hopes the tentative agreement goes through because he believes Toledo Machining closing would affect the area.

"I think it would be good for Stellantis, I think it would be good for the UAW employees, and It'll be good for Perrysburg Township and the region."

WTOL 11 reached out to a Stellantis spokesperson but the company declined to comment because the agreement has not yet been ratified.
