SYLVANIA, Ohio — Sylvania Mayor Craig Stough is retiring a year early, he announced at a city council meeting on Monday.
Stough's current term runs through 2025, but he said at the meeting he wants to retire on his own terms and allow time for a proper transition. Current council President Mark Frye will finish out the remaining year beginning Jan. 1, a city representative told WTOL 11.
Stough has served as the city's mayor since 1996 and most recently won reelection in 2021, defeating former councilperson Katie Cappellini.
During Stough's time in office, he ran unopposed for 25 of those 29 years.
"I have been one of the luckiest people on Earth to have served in Sylvania," Stough said at the council meeting. "It has been the honor and privilege of my life to serve 10 years on Sylvania City Council and 29 years as Sylvania's mayor."
Before his three decades as mayor, Stough first served on city council in 1986.
