SYLVANIA, Ohio — UPDATE: Both Washington Local Schools and Sylvania Schools have closed for Thursday due to the phone and internet outage impacting the districts. Both districts made these announcements on Facebook around 5:30 a.m. Thursday.
No transportation and routes will run for either district Thursday.
The original story is below:
The Sylvania and Washington Local school districts may cancel classes on Thursday due to a phone and internet outage both say has affected them and other districts in northwest Ohio on Wednesday.
The districts stated in emails to parents and guardians of students that the outage was caused by a car accident that cut a fiber cable at the intersection of Angola Road and South McCord Road. Neither said when the accident happened.
Repairing the line will happen overnight and into Thursday morning.
If the school districts cancel classes on Thursday, emails or text messages will be sent before 6 a.m., as well as notify families through other typical means like social media.
"Our number one priority remains to be the safety and security of our students," Sylvania's email to families says. "Although learning can happen without the internet, this, coupled with a phone outage will cause disruptions for attendance, powerschool, phone calls in and out of the buildings, lunch purchases and other essential processes."
Washington Local's superintendent said if the district cancels classes on Thursday, "it would be our intention to be back at school Friday 11/15, once repairs are complete."
It is not known at this time what other school districts in northwest Ohio may have been affected by the outage or what caused the vehicle to hit the fiber line.
