TOWNSHIP OF SYLVANIA, Sylvania — A police officer and a domestic violence suspect were sent to the hospital after the suspect ran into the officer's car in Sylvania Township on Monday.
The officer suffered leg injuries and has since been released. As of 3 p.m. Monday, the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Devontay Bryant, remained in the hospital. He was shot in the bicep and neck.
The incident began when officers responded to a domestic violence call at an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Black Oak Drive around 5 a.m
According to police, two women were assaulted, but neither suffered any severe injuries. Bryant reportedly left the scene.
Another officer later located Bryant's vehicle, but didn't pursue it because the pursuit would endanger the public. The officer decided to get a warrant later.
However, there was concern that he would come back and do harm.
Those suspicions were correct as Bryant did return.
An officer sitting outside the victim's apartment saw his car and approached in his police vehicle.
Police said that Byrant faced the officer and hit the police car with his car. Police fired shots and the suspect's vehicle crashed into a Jeep.
Officers then gave Bryant first aid, and both he and the officer involved were taken to the hospital.
"There is damage to the entire driver's side of the police car," said Sylvania Township Police Chief Paul Long. "The suspect accelerated and struck the police car; during that, the officer did fire shots and struck the suspect."
Long said his team is currently in the middle of the preliminary investigation.
"We're concerned for everybody, this is just a tragic situation," Chief Long said.
At a press conference Monday, Long said police have responded to the residence 12 times since September of 2019 and a total of seven reports have been filed.
